El Chapulin Screening Tour
Last November we were in Miahuatlán with Onofre - the Maestro Mezcalero behind our Espadin - and our friend and film maker, Leo Stamps. The aim of the trip was to make a short film about life in Miahuatlán and the local mezcal culture, but beyond this general brief we weren't sure what we would find. We began by interviewing Onofre, and it quickly became clear that his story was rich and compelling enough to fill several of the short formats we had in mind. We decided to focus the entire documentary on Onofre; his difficult experiences as an imigrant in the United States, finding redemption through mezcal production, and what this means for the local population.
As always, the fillm was a joy to shoot, and a slog to edit. But 8 months later I am happy to say that the final version is ready. And it's a real beauty. Stunning cinematography from Leo, an original score from Sam Hudson Scott, and a real emotional punch. It's a visceral window into rural Oaxaca, and the joys and the hardships of life there.
